When "rats"--nonunion workers--are given the formerly union-held jobs at the new paper mill, Bryan finds himself in a tense and dangerous environment due to the continuous conflict. Torn between feelings of loyalty for his union father and his developing emotions for a girl from a nonunion family, Bryan discovers it is increasingly difficult to separate his friends from his enemies. And then he witnessess the most violent act yet.
