Museum Assistant
Position Description
Job Summary:
The Museum Assistant will host patrons and assist museum staff with special projects throughout the museum. This includes supporting the operation of the Museum store and galleries, giving tours, assisting with merchandising and inventory management, supporting communications functions, and assisting with collections and curatorial projects. Museum Assistant functions may vary based on the needs of the museum. The Museum Assistant will report directly to the Executive Director.
Major Responsibilities:

Provide friendly, welcoming, and informative experience for museum visitors and partners.

Provide coverage for the reception desk/admissions/gift shop during peak times or to relieve staff to perform other duties as required.

Key Holder—open/close museum as needed.

Assists in museum events, exhibits, and programs as required.

Assists with cleaning and maintenance of facilities.

Assists with research and development of specific exhibits.

Assists with care and cataloging of collections.

Work with and organizes volunteers/volunteer duties, as well as volunteer programs.

Other duties as assigned.
Minimum Qualifications
Knowledge of: General office management principles and practices including record maintenance; cash handling, inventory management, general history of the area/tourism industry.
Skill in: Communicating clearly and effectively, orally and in writing, with the public, community organizations, tourism providers, and staff. Must be able to read and interpret policies and procedures; prepare a variety of reports, records, and correspondences; maintain filing and recordkeeping system. Skills in social media, web design, and collections software a plus.
Education: High School Diploma or GED required. Bachelor’s Degree in History or similar field, college course work in Museum Studies, Museum Science, or related discipline relevant to the Museum is preferred, but not required.
Experience: One year of customer service, cash handling, or museum experience is preferred, but not required.
Physical Demands Requirements and Working Conditions:
This is primarily an office classification although standing in work areas and walking between work areas may be required. The ability to climb stairs is also required. Employees must possess the ability to lift, carry, push, and pull materials and objects that weigh up to 50 pounds without assistance. Employees work in an environment with limited noise levels and controlled temperatures. Employees may interact with upset members of the public or their representatives while enforcing museum policies and procedures.
Compensation and Benefits:
This is a temporary part-time position with the possibility of becoming a permanent part-time position. The position is currently offering up to 30 hours per week starting at $16 per hour, depending on experience. Following a successful completion of a 3-month probationary period, employees can receive tuition and travel support for professional development as the budget allows.
